Rolling Hills is a gated community with private roads and three guarded entrances- Palos Verdes Drive North, Palos Verdes Drive East, and Crest Road. Rolling Hills encompasses sections of Palos Verdes Drive North, the Peninsula, Portuguese Bend, and Crenshaw Blvd. You need a permit to obtain access to Rolling Hills and guests must be authorized by the resident to enter the community. Majority of the Rolling Hills lots are greater then one acre, some even multi-acres. The equestrian city offers a 23-mile private trail system. Typically, all homes are required to be of ranch style (therefore one level) and painted white; all border fences must be white with three rails. Rolling Hills has no street lights or sidewalks and outdoor lighting is limited.
Rolling Hills is part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District but no schools are located behind the gates. Often confused, Rancho Del Mar (a continuation school) is located in Rolling Hills but accessed outside the Crest Road Gate. The city is maintained by the Rolling Hills Community Association (RHCA). RHCA provides the community with two riding rings and three tennis courses. A fire station is located on Crest Road in Rolling Hills, operated by the City of Los Angeles.
Rancho Del Mar is located in Rolling Hills on Crest Road and is one of the three public schools in the PVPUSD. The school possess a small enrollment, focusing on students who experience difficulty with regular high school curriculum and environment. The school offers a more personalized environment.
